Occupation of Pescadores
On March 15, 1895, a Japanese force of 5,500 men started traveling to Pescadores Island. Their aim was to create a base in Taiwan, forcing China to allow the cession of Taiwan. On March 23, the forced arrived on Peng-hu island. Japanese battleships bombed the forts, and soldiers fled to the boats in panic. By the end of March, Taiwan was captured by the Japanese.
Battle of Jiangsu
Haichow was part of the Grand canal connecting Peking to Nanking, and the Chinese delivered supplies and troops via this canal. On March 24, Japan landed in Haichow. They started firing at the small forts, and after a few hours, the Chinese gave up and abandoned their forts.
Effects
By controlling Taiwan, the Japanese could prevent China from reinforcing their army. By winning Jiangsu, the Japanese controlled of the invaluable Grand Canal. They could now prevent China's transportation.
